Investment in Our Future Means More Than Machines

At FEMA Corporation, we continue our commitment to invest in our local and regional community, but that means more than putting money into machines and facilities. If we’re going to invest in our future, however, that means we also have to invest in the future of the region’s youth.

In that vein, we regularly offer internships to engineering students and provide the opportunity for tuition assistance as well. Originally our intern program went to college juniors and seniors, but recently we extended the internships to college students entering their freshman and sophomore years. One of our interns, a graduate from Otsego High School, Dustin Goodrich, has begun his internship at FEMA’s Portage plant this summer before attending Western Michigan University in the fall.

Goodrich, who finished within Otsego High School’s top 11 academic students, will be studying mechanical engineering when he starts his studies at WMU.

“I was very excited to be offered an internship at such a prestigious engineering company,” he told the online newsletter. “Not many students have the opportunity to work in their field of study right out of high school.” Goodrich added that receiving the internship took away much of the stress from preparing to start his college studies. “It’s really exciting. I’m really grateful.”

FEMA has students working on the assembly and test lines. They’ll not only produce products, but also test the products they make. Dustin tells us he is looking forward to the hands-on experience we’re offering, as do the rest of our interns.

We continually accept resumes from students pursuing a degree in the engineering field looking for internship opportunities. Even if openings are not immediately available, we will hold the resumes to consider for future openings.

Reaching and supporting students who show an early interest in engineering is good for us and the entire industry. Students like our interns will be among those creating  advances in mechanical engineering. Giving them a good start is an investment in all of our futures.

It’s an investment in our region’s community that we’re proud to make.
